Landing pages are important, because you can analyze visitors behavior once the visitor enter to your site. You can see if the visitor remains on the site, or leaves in seconds by checking the Bounce Rate, and optimize the page so the visitors can move forward on your site. If you have a high Bounce rate then obvious, something is wrong and changes need to be done immediately, changes like a better linking to the rest of the website or a different content for that specific page.
