1 Installation Issues:

1.1 What is the Java Development Kit and why do I need it?

The Java Development Kit (in short JDK) is the platform that enables Advanced Web Stats to run on almost any platform that exists today. You can thus use Advanced Web Stats on the operating system that you enjoy most.

Advanced Web Stats requires the JDK version 1.5. If you have a previous version, please download the latest version for your operating system:

http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/ (for Windows and Linux).

ImportantJava Development Kit required!
JRE (Java Runtime Environment) is not enough for Advanced Web Stats to run.
More information about JDK you can find on the Java Development Kit Required page from our User Guide.

1.2 How can I install the AWS tracker script?

To install the Advanced Web Stats script please follow the steps below:

  1. Download the AWS tracker script aws.js and copy it to the main directory of your website content.
  2. Reference the script (<script type="text/javascript" src="/aws.js"></script>) in your HTML. Enter the following line in all of your HTML pages. Although it can go anywhere in the pages, we recommend putting it in the <head> section. If you use a common include or template, you can enter it there.
  3. Setup your profile. In the AWS Administration interface, edit the profile in question and click on the General Settings tab. Set the Visitor Tracking Method to AWS Session ID and click the Apply button

2.2 The [AdvancedWebStats] folder has a deny icon on it. What should I do?

3 Features:

3.1 What type of database do you recommend to use?

For evaluation purposes it is recommended to use the Hypersonic embedded database because this option will install also a Demo profile to get you up and running as quickly as possible.

For production purposes we recommend you to use an external database. Advanced Web Stats offers currently support for MySQL and PostgreSQL.

3.2 How to create users, groups and set privileges?

Before creating users and groups you need to understand the different levels of access and how you can group users to grant them different levels of access.

When creating an user you can choose from three levels of access:

  • Administrator - the user will have the same administrative rights as you have, like creating profiles, administrating users and groups, manage filters, logs, changing settings or scheduled tasks. But the user will not have permission to change you password.
  • User - the user will have permission to edit settings for profiles.
  • Viewer - the user will have permission to view reports only.

By assigning an user to a group you will set to that user privileges to see or edit specific profiles or all the profiles created by you or other administrator.

To do this you need to assign the user to one of the following categories:

  • Administrators - the users from this group have administrative privileges.
  • Users - the users from this group have, depending on the access level, the privilege to edit or only view profiles.
  • Custom user group - the users from this group have, depending on the access level, the privilege to edit or only view the profiles assigned to this group.

NoteIf you set the access level for a user "Administrator", that user will be automatically assigned to the "Administrators" group.
